A Florida police officer has been suspended for allowing two arrestees to smoke cigarettes and make out in the back of a squad car — an incident that was captured, at least partially, on the officer's body cam, according to his superiors.
The Fort Pierce Police Department says officer Doug McNeal was handed a 20-day suspension for mutliple policy violations following an internal investigation, West Palm Beach TV station WPTV reported.
The unnamed man and woman were arrested in July 2018 at a Walmart store, where they were accused of shoplifting. Police documents indicate jewelry and a baby toy were taken from the store.
McNeal, according to reports, took the couple to a patrol cruiser where the man and woman were recorded smoking and, later, making out.
“We didn’t think we were allowed to smoke in here,” the woman says, according to video from The Daily Dot.
“Uh, you’re really not, but it’s fine,” McNeal says.
Another officer, at a later point, can he heard on the body cam saying, “I think they’re making babies back there.”
McNeal, who has been with the department since 2014, began serving his suspension on Feb. 14.
