Senior Rachel Finelli found the back of the net twice on Thursday night as the Middletown Cavaliers downed Smyrna 2-0 in the opening round of the DIAA Girls Soccer State Tournament.
Middletown kept the Lady Eagles grounded most of the contest, out-shooting Smyrna 12-5 and leading the way in corner opportunities, 6-2.
Finelli scored in each half, tallying the first of her two goals in the 20th minute of the opening half and her second in the 60th minute of the second.
Freshman Taylor Wolf posted the clean-sheet in goal for the Lady Cavaliers, while her counterpart in net, Samantha Sawyer did her best to keep Smyrna in the game making 10 saves.
The Lady Cavaliers remain perfect on the year, while the season for the Lady Eagles ends. Smyrna made the postseason for the third-straight season, posting a 9-6 mark during the regular season.
Middletown now moves onto the state semifinals on Wednesday where they’ll take on No. 2 Caesar Rodney who breezed past No. 7 Dover on Thursday night, 8-0.
A site and time for Thursday’s semifinal are still to be determined.
