A seven-goal second quarter by Salesianum propelled them over the Appoquinimink Jaguars, 17-6, Saturday night in the DIAA Boys Lacrosse State Championship at Caravel Academy.
Despite a first-quarter hat-trick from Appo’s Cross Ferrera, Salesianum led 5-3 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Sallies would take control for good outscoring the Jags 7-0 in the quarter to take a commanding 12-3 lead at the halftime break.
Salesianum would add two more goals in the third, but Appo kept pace with two goals of their own in the quarter and Sallies led 14-5 heading into the fourth quarter, but that’s as close at the Jags would get.
Appo would score two more goals in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Sallies offensive bursts in the first-half.
The Jags finished the regular season with a record of 11-4, earning the No. 6 overall seed in the DIAA State Tournament. After knocking off No. 11 Red Lion CA in the opening round, 21-2, the Jags moved onto the state semifinals defeating No. 3 Wilmington Friends 11-10 in the second round.
Appo would go onto beat another higher-seed in the tournament in the semifinals, beating No. 2 Tower Hill 12-8 to advance to the state championship game.
Sallies, the No. 1 seed coming into the tournament, capped off a 12-3 season with a state championship, defeating No. 16 Dover, No. 9 Sussex Tech and No. 5 Archmere Academy along the way.
