The first round of the DIAA Volleyball State Tournament kicked off on Thursday night; the Lady Hawks from St. Georgs Tech saw their season end falling to Red Lion, while the Appoquinimink Lady Jaguars knocked off Cape Henlopen to advance to the second round
No. 19 Appoquinimink 3, No. 14 Cape Henlopen 1
The Lady Jags pulled off the upset victory Thursday night, knocking off higher-seeded No. 14 Cape Henlopen 3-1 in the opening round of the DIAA Volleyball State Tournament.
The Lady Jags took the first two sets Thursday night, both by 25-17 scores, to take an early 2-0 lead.
Cape bounced back with a 25-19 win in the third set, before Appo won the fourth 32-30 for the 3-1 match victory.
The Lady Jags, the No. 19 seed, move onto the second round Saturday taking on No. 3 Padua at Brandywine High School starting at 5 p.m.
No. 24 St. Georges Tech 0, No. 9 Red Lion 3
No. 9 Red Lion eliminated No. 24 St. Georges Tech from the DIAA Volleyball State Tournament on Thursday night, 3-0.
Red Lion won in straight-sets, 26-24, 25-14 and 25-19.
Klinefelter (2 aces, 4 digs, 13 assists), Burchfield (1 kill, 3 aces, 15 digs, 1 assist) and Charlier (9 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 3 digs) led the way for the Lady Hawks.
Red Lion moves on to the second round this Saturday, traveling to take on No. 8 Wilmington Friends at 6 p.m.
