The Appoquinimink High School volleyball team, champions of Flight A, overpowered Flight B champs Brandywine 3-1 in the Blue Hen Conference title match Monday at Brandywine.
The Jaguars won the first two sets 25-13 and 25-23, dropped the third set 23-25, but then won the fourth set 25-18 to take the title.
The Jaguars posted a perfect 7-0 record against Flight A opponents and now have an overall record of 11-5.
State tournament begins Nov. 2
Appo is seeded 15th in the state tournament and will face 18-seed Concord at Red Lion Christian Academy Thursday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.
The Lady Jags are making their fourth straight playoff appearance.
An experienced Appo squad seems well prepared for the state tournament as they went head-to-head against some of the state’s best during the regular season.
Eight of the Lady Jags’ 15 opponents this season qualified for the postseason. They went 3-5 in those games, earning wins over No. 14 Caesar Rodney, No. 21 Wilmington Christian and their opponent in the opening round of the tournament, Concord. Appo swept the Lady Raiders 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18 back in early October. Concord lost just two games to conference opponents this season, going 10-2 in those games, and 11-4 overall.
The Lady Jags enter Thursday’s playoff match backed by an impressive group of seniors and underclassmen.
Seniors Brooke Miller, Carly Burns, Caelan Brooks, Mary Vallely, Sara Mullen and Samantha Hrycak have all provided leadership and strong play while juniors Jillian Morris, Emily Brown, Katy DeSatnick, Brianna DiStefano, Emily Black and Madeline Aniunas, sophomores Megan Aube and Jillian Wyatt, and freshman Alyssa White have also added to the talented Lady Jags’ championship season.
Appo is led by Head Coach Brandi Anderson, with JV Coach Jennifer Loftus, Freshman Coach Jessica Fogiel and volunteer assistant Barry Hudson.
