The Appoquinimink High School softball team is scheduled to play at Caravel Academy tonight, Thursday, April 26 at 7 p.m., in a battle of undefeated teams.
Heading into this week’s play, only two high school softball teams in the state remained undefeated, Appoquinimink and Caravel Academy.
The Lady Jags are 8-0, while the Lady Bucs are 9-0.
The two softball titans will meet tonight, Thursday, April 26, at Caravel Academy at 7 p.m.
With dominant pitching and an explosive offense, the Jags find themselves pulling ahead of the field in the Blue Hen Flight A. The next closest team in the divisional standings is Hodgson at 6-3.
Appo has already earned wins over Padua Academy, Newark, Concord, Mt. Pleasant, Caesar Rodney, Archmere Academy, Delcastle and Delaware Military Academy.
Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt has shut down teams, posting an impressive campaign so far, backed by fellow sophomore Autumn Gentry who has pitched in relief at times.
With strong defense behind them, the two second-year players have helped keep opponents in check, holding teams to an average of just over a run a game. In their first eight games this season, the Lady Jags have allowed just 12 runs.
At the plate, Appo has been led by a talented group of seniors and underclassmen. While fourth-year players Brooke Miller and Andrea Johnson have offered valuable experience and leadership, junior Mallory Weir, sophomores Alicia Bruce and Tayler Vitola, along with freshmen standouts Madison Bauerle and Madeline Olivas have helped the Lady Jags average nearly 10 runs per game so far this season.
With just over half of the regular season schedule still to go, the Lady Jags have put themselves in a good position to qualify for the state tournament.
Appo qualified for the tournament last season, advancing to the second round before being eliminated by eventual state champion Milford in a one-run game.
This time last season, the Lady Jags had a 5-3 mark before running the table the rest of the way, winning 10 games in a row to close out the regular season.
After facing Caravel tonight, Appo will challenge A.I. duPont, Newark Charter, Charter School of Wilmington, Middletown, St. Mark’s, St. Georges Tech, Cape Henlopen, Hodgson and William Penn to end the regular season.
