In a hotly-contested game with pushing, shoving, shouting and yellow cards, the Appoquinimink High School soccer team battled arch-rival Salesianum to a 1-1 tie at halftime, before the Sals pulled away for a 3-1 win Saturday.
Salesianum scored first three minutes into the game, but the Jaguars tied the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick by Matthew Meadows.
The half ended knotted at 1-1.
In the second half, Salesianum pulled in front 2-1 with a goal at the 46-minute mark.
Tensions continued to run high for the rest of the second half until with about five minutes remaining, Salesianum converted on a penalty kick for a 3-1 cushion.
The Sallies, who improved to 7-2, outshot the Jaguars 6-2 and also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Eric Fasteson made four saves for the Jags who are now 7-2-2.
