The 2018 DIAA Volleyball State Tournament began Thursday night with eight opening round games to decide Saturday’s second round matchups.
Five higher seeds came away with wins, while three lower seeds found a way to move on.
The shock of the evening game at Caesar Rodney where No. 24 St. Georges Tech knocked off the Lady Riders, 3-1, to advance to the second round.
Joining the Lady Hawks as a lower seed to move on, No. 21 St. Elizabeth who swept New Castle Charter School and No. 22 Sussex Central who also swept their way to the next round, defeating No 11 Tower Hill, 3-0.
No. 10 St. Mark’s, No. 13 Friends, No. 14 Red Lion, No. 15 Indian River and No. 16 Cape Henlopen all advance Thursday as higher seeds.
St. Mark’s fought off scrappy No. 23 Caravel Academy 3-1, Friends swept No. 20 Mt. Pleasant 3-0, Red Lion swept No. 19 St. Thomas More, Indian River swept No. 18 Appoquinimink and Cape escaped a close one with No. 17 Dover, 3-2.
The second round of the DIAA Volleyball State Tournament will be played Saturday with games at Salesianum, Charter School of Wilmington, Archmere Academy and Ursuline Academy.
