In the first round of the softball state tournament today, St. Georges Tech edged Middletown 5-4 on a solo home run by Sierra Vance in the top of the seventh inning.

Sierra Vance hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie game and lift St. Georges Tech to a 5-4 win over Middletown in the first round of the state softball tournament today.

Each team entered the tournament with a record of 12-6.

Seeded 10th in the tournament, the Hawks built a four-run lead in the top of the first inning, including a two-run single by Vance.

Then the 7th-seeded Cavaliers battled back, chipping away at the lead.

Middletown scored a run on a RBI double by Melissa Jones in the first, another run in the third on an RBI double by Lydia Drake, and then cut the lead to 4-3 on an RBI single by Carly Setting in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Middletown's Gabriella Lano ripped a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4 before Vance's game winner for St. Georges Tech.

Vance had three hits in the game for the Hawks.

Caldwell and Jones had multiple hits for Middletown.


St. Georges Tech now advances to the second round of the state tournament Saturday, May 16 when the Hawks will face 2nd-seeded Smyrna High in Smyrna at a time to be announced.
