Sept. 11 memorial services planned throughout Delaware, many taking place virtually

The COVID-19 pandemic will alter the way Americans remember the Sept. 11 attacks Friday, but several memorial events are still taking place — some virtually — throughout Delaware.

Nineteen years ago, 2,977 people were killed at the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after terrorists hijacked planes.

Delaware Military Academy remembers Sept. 11 at an annual remembrance ceremony.

Citizens' Hose Company No. 1 of Smyrna

The fire company is holding its annual memorial ceremony virtually via Facebook Live. The event starts at 7 p.m. Friday.

9/11 Memorial & Museum

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center site in New York will livestream its annual commemoration ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday. The event will feature stories from survivors and first responders. The museum will reopen Friday at limited capacity.

9/11 Memorial Blood Drive at Dover International Speedway

The blood drive, in its 15th year, started Thursday and continues Friday in coordination with the Blood Bank of Delmarva. 

The blood bank hopes to register 240 people to donate, who could aid up to 720 hospital patients. Donors get to drive a lap around the racetrack.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Delaware Military Academy

Delaware Military Academy will hold its annual remembrance ceremony virtually on Friday. The event regularly draws some of Delaware's highest-ranking public officials. A start time has not been posted on the school's website.

Dover Air Force Base

The fire emergency services team at the Dover Air Force Base, in partnership with local first responders, is hosting a memorial event at the AMC Museum in Dover at 10 a.m. Friday.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance is by invitation only.
