Uber is testing a new service that lets riders bring their pet along for the ride. Uber Pet launches in select cities on Oct. 16.

Riders will be able to request Uber Pet when selecting a ride. A surcharge of $3 to $5 will be included in the cost when you use Uber Pet.

However, riders with service animals are not required to select Uber Pet. Uber's service animal policy isn't changing. Service animals are always allowed to ride in an Uber with no extra cost.

Uber drivers won't be required to offer Uber Pet, but will get a cut of the surcharge if they do.

Uber Pet will be available in Austin, Denver, Nashville, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tampa Bay starting Oct. 16.
